The US election is over. No more political texts, emails, commercials, mailers, ad nauseum. Alas, these days in America, the next election season comes on the heels of the last. Whatever party you may be affiliated with, whomever you may have voted for…I want to give you my perspective on America’s decision.
We deserve judgment. Ruth Graham is reported to have said to her husband Billy, “If God doesn’t judge America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.” And it’s even worse for, “Sodom Had No Bibles,” as the title of Leonard Ravenhill’s book declares. The greater the revelation, the graver the responsibility.
Yet, God is merciful. There is a remnant of the faithful who are intercessors. The Lord told Abraham that if only ten righteous were in the city of Sodom, it would be spared. Alas, there were not. So, the fire fell.
I see this moment as a reprieve from retribution. It is a brief window for repentance. Take a deep breath. Offer a prayer of thanks. Then, do not go back to business as usual. For if we think that an election outcome is the equivalent of revival, we are foolish, and that will lead us to deeper peril—perhaps unrecoverable. Instead—carpe diem—seize the day! Share the Gospel, love your neighbors (even your enemies), glorify God in all things, and in brokenness seek God for spiritual awakening. For that alone is our hope for America.
Turn or burn.
Yours for Spiritual Awakening,
Dennis Thurman, AMS
